The 2020 Sports Personality of the Year will be presented at a live ceremony in December, though it may not be the usual glittering affair due to social distancing measures.
The awards are one of the most anticipated dates in the sporting calendar, and despite the disruptions to many major worldwide sporting events, including Wimbledon and Euro 2020, sporting fans are still in for a treat, as sports stars are set to be recognised for rising to the challenges that this year has thrown at them.
The ultimate accolade is to walk away with the iconic Sports Personality of the Year trophy. The magnificent trophy depicts a silver four lens television camera sitting upon a tripod. This stands on a black circular three-tiered plinth, which is adorned by the names of previous winners that are engraved on silver shields around the base. Smaller replicas of the main engraved award are given to the winners of the remaining categories.
The overall winner is always chosen by the public, who can also put forward the nominations for the Unsung Sporting Hero award. This is a chance to thank and reward some of the ordinary people who go above and beyond in the name of sport.
The power of sport has never been more vital than in this year, and in recognition of the challenges faced, a new award, The Captain Tom Young Unsung Hero, makes its inaugural appearance. Engraved awards are always something to be treasured, whether as an international sports star or as a dedicated community sports leader.
