Cockburn’s of Leith, known for having had many famous customers over the years, has announced it is opening a new shop in the centre of Edinburgh city.
The wine merchant was established over 200 years ago, in 1796, by John and Robert Cockburn, who, during the Enlightenment, wanted to provide the people of Edinburgh and the British Empire with the finest wines and spirits. The brothers sought to import their goods from across the globe in order to source the very best. The company can boast of some very well-known customers, including King George IV, Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott.
The new premises is located on Frederick Street in the city, and as well as being able to come into the store to buy wines and spirits, customers can also get involved with in-store tasting sessions and can order goods to be delivered. The shop has a chiller and wine racks fitted from floor to ceiling.
The Cockburn brand is even more well-known through Cockburns Port, established in Portugal after Robert Cockburn served in the country during the Napoleonic Wars. Cockburn Street was also named after Robert and John’s older brother, Lord Cockburn, who was a solicitor general.
The director of the wine merchant has stated that even though online sales continue to grow, Cockburn’s of Leith wanted to provide a service to those wanting more guidance on which bottle they should buy. A bottle picked up from the new shop and served in engraved glassware would be perfect for a special occasion.
