Alcoholic beverage global leader, Diageo, has announced its investment in the creation of a London-based microbrewery and culture hub.
The new development, to be known as ‘Guinness at Old Brewer’s Yard,’ will be located in Covent Garden, London, on a brewing site with a long history dating back to 1722. The opening of the venue is planned for Autumn 2023. Old Brewer’s Yard is owned by the Mercers’ Company currently. The company stated that it has collaborated closely with Diageo to create plans that will see the historical significance of the site being restored as well as putting the new development into a modern context.
Creating around 150 jobs, the 50,000 square feet development will create a community space as well as a training hub. It has been announced that the site will be the UK South hub of Diageo’s programme, ‘Learning for Life, Bartending and Hospitality’.
Thousands of visitors are expected to flock to the destination to enjoy what’s on offer. Guinness is becoming more popular in the UK with sales increasing.
Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has visited the location and commented on how important the investment is to London and the hospitality and tourism industries. This investment by Diageo comes after success at both the Dublin Guinness Storehouse and Johnnie Walker Princes Street in Edinburgh where visitors can enjoy a taste of Guinness in engraved drinkware.
Life is expected to be injected back into the London site where beer was first brewed 300 years ago.
