A look at wines celebrating anniversaries in 2020

With 2020 well underway, and a year not likely to be forgotten in a hurry due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we examine how recent decades have shaped up, with a look at some particularly good wine vintages.

The 10’s

Despite prices dropping since 2011, the 2010 Bordeaux vintage is highly regarded as a classic. A bottle of Lafite would have cost you £1,000 back then, but can now be picked up for around £600. Sometimes it pays to wait to pick up a bargain.

Millennium favourites

The new millennium saw white Burgundy’s and wines from the Rhône take the lead with some exceptional wines. Favourite Bordeaux included offerings from Latour, Petrus and Cheval Blanc. Meanwhile, Dom Pérignon took the crown for champagne.

1999

Celebrating a 21st birthday or anniversary? Then celebrate with a 1999 red Burgundy, the opulently named Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Ile des Vergelesses was believed to have been the best ever produced by winemaker Claude de Nicolay.

25 years later

Choices for a celebratory bottle of 1995 champagne for a 25th anniversary, should include Moët et Chandon, Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires or a Krug Clos du Mesnil. Time to dust of those engraved crystal champagne flutes and raise a toast.

70’s gold

50 years ago, 1970 was the year of the claret. A vintage Fifth Growth Château Lynch-Moussas is a pleasant, mature claret that is easy on the palette and the pocket at around £30 a bottle. Other golden wines include Sauternes and vintage port from the same year.

No matter the occasion, you will find that there is a perfect wine for it.
