With England’s Lionesses recently winning the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 competition, here’s a brief overview of the much sought-after trophy.
2022 champions
On 31st July, the England women’s team lifted the Euro 2022 trophy after beating the German women’s team 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium. Normal time ended with a score of 1-1, with Chloe Kelly scoring the winning goal in extra time. The Lionesses lifted the trophy in front of a crowd of over 87,000, which was a record number of spectators for a UEFA tournament.
Trophy details
Weighing 6.7kg, the current Women’s Euro trophy was created by G.D.E Bertoni, based in Milan, Italy. The trophy was revealed in 2005 in Manchester during the tournament draw. Germany had retained the previous trophy, as the regulations at the time stated that any team winning three consecutive tournaments could do so.
The Italian sculptor designed the trophy with the shape of the Euro logo at the time in mind. Using technology as well as traditional craftmanship, a trophy depicting motion and flowing lines was designed. The England team took home a replica of the trophy, which was full size, whilst UEFA holds on to the real trophy. The winning team was also awarded 40 gold medals, which are given to both staff and players. As runners-up, Germany would have received 40 silver medals to distribute to its own players and staff. Each team that participated in the final tournament is given a commemorative plaque, adding to its engraved awards.
The trophy will next be awarded at the UEFA Women’s Euro tournament in 2025.
