Each year, the buzz and speculation around the BRIT Awards never fails, and there is usually as much interest in the statuette as the nominees. This year is no exception, as it is the first time in the history of the awards that there is a collaboration between two designers.
Past designers have included industry giants such as Dame Vivienne Westwood, Tracey Emin, Sir Philip Treacy, Dame Zaha Hadid, Sir David Adjaye and Anish Kapoor. This year’s statuette has been designed and created by Es Devlin and Yinka Ilori, and it is set to be a stunning piece of work.
The 2021 awards will see not one but two different statuettes being presented. The main statuette has been gloriously coloured in Ilori’s signature Nigerian colour palette, whereas a second smaller statuette follows Devlin’s creativity, and she has described it as being:
“Engraved with the maze pattern that celebrates the paths many of those working within the creative industries have had to tread in order to progress through this challenging year.”
The idea behind presenting two engraved awards is that the recipient has the freedom to give the smaller award to whoever they think deserves it, whether an influence in their chosen field or just someone who has helped them through the past year. Speaking for the BRIT Awards Show Programme, Ilori explained how the idea to give winners the ability to award another is a direct result of the past year’s struggles with the current global pandemic, especially the lockdown measures.
The idea of giving back is something that almost everyone has seen or experienced over the past 12 months, and the statuettes are a way to celebrate this.
