The 2021 National Television Awards are set to return to TV screens this week, after being postponed several times due to Covid-19.
Billed as ‘television’s biggest night of the year’, the ceremony promises to be just as glitzy and glamorous as usual, with some of Britain’s most famous stars due to attend. First held in 1995, this will be the 26th edition of the awards ceremony, and it is to be held at the O2 in London, hosted by Joel Dommett.
The awards are voted on exclusively by the general public and have become fiercely contested, especially between firm favourites Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Eastenders, although the rivalry is genuinely friendly. The most prestigious award of the night is the Special Recognition Award, won last year by Sir Michael Palin.
Viewers may be most interested to see if British favourites Ant & Dec can walk away with yet another engraved trophy. They have won every year since the awards began, most notably for Most Popular Entertainment/TV Presenter, which they have walked away with 19 times.
The winners are presented with silver engraved awards that are styled like a large upward swirl wrapped around a silver ball, tapering out to a fine point. They stand around 12 inches high and are engraved with the winner’s name and category. The long-awaited ceremony is sure to be watched by millions, and it is one of the highlights of the television calendar.
The 2021 National Television Awards will be held on 9th September. Voting is online or by phone, with winners announced live on the night.
