Father and son team David and Nick Miller of Millers Fish & Chips in Haxby, North Yorkshire, have scooped the top prize at the 2018 National Fish & Chip Awards, bagging an impressive trophy in the process.

At a glittering award ceremony held in London at the Lancaster Hotel, the Millers were awarded the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, after entering the competition for a second year running. They beat around 10,500 other fish and chip outlets to walk away with the coveted engraved trophy, and spoke about their delight at winning. Son Nick said:

“We entered the competition for the first time last year, and were so proud to get to the final. But to go all the way this time and scoop the ‘Oscar’ of the fish and chip world is truly amazing.”

The family has been running fish and chip shops for four generations over the past 77 years, and offers traditional fish and chips along with vegetarian, gluten-free and allergen-free options. The selection process took over seven months and involved several stages, including quality, sustainable sourcing, customer service and menu diversification.

The awards are celebrating their 30-year anniversary, with the first of them held in 1988. As well as the top prize, there were several categories up for grabs, including Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year, Young Fish Fryer of the Year, and the Good Catch – The Sustainable Seafood Award. The winners all take home individual engraved glass awards, while the large engraved silver trophy goes to the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year winners, David and Nick Miller.
