Drinks companies offer online help during social distancing

With the temporary closure of pubs, bars, restaurants and cafés around the world in response to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, drinks giant Bombay Sapphire has launched an online platform for self-isolators to learn new skills and express their creativity.

The initiative went live on 27th March, and the Bacardi-owned company hopes it will keep people’s spirits up, as they practice social distancing.

The experience gives followers the chance to learn new and interesting skills via live streaming, with workshops and classes from a range of different fields, such as how to make the perfect cocktail. Bombay Sapphire has teamed up with Skillshare, and a three month free membership is being offered to those interested. Weekly Drink and Draw events will be held in conjunction with online marketplace Society6, and Hunker has made its extensive library of DIY tutorials and content available to users.

The Bombay Sapphire distillery in Laverstoke Mill, UK, has also changed its production to making much needed hand sanitiser, following in the footsteps of Rémy Cointreau and other major drinks manufacturers. Meanwhile, The Savoy Hotel in London along with its bartenders, have also launched a programme of online sessions for the on-trade, in partnership with Diageo, who own whisky brand Johnny Walker.

Drinkers may not be able to pop down the pub for a little while now, but raising an engraved glass or two of their favourite tipple as they learn a new skill may just help to ease the boredom.
