How to celebrate World Rum Day 2022

Back to Blog

Next Saturday, 9th July, sees the return of World Rum Day – a chance to join brands, bars, distilleries and rum lovers across the globe in an annual celebration of this popular spirit. Read on for a history of this drink and some cocktails to try in honour of the occasion.

History of rum

It is unclear when rum was actually invented, but it is thought that it could, in fact, date back into pre-history. An ancient drink called Brum that was created by the Malay people is one theory as to the origin of rum. It was during the 17th century that the first distillation of rum took place. It is believed that slaves on a Caribbean sugarcane plantation may have created the spirit by fermenting the by-product of the process they were using to refine the sugar. The alcohol level was raised and refined over time to eventually create rum.

Pina Colada

A holiday favourite, this indulgent cocktail is made using white rum mixed with pineapple juice and coconut cream and could be served in an engraved highball glass.

Hurricane cocktail

This party-favourite cocktail is made by shaking both dark and white rum with passionfruit, orange and lemon juice, sugar syrup and grenadine. It should be then strained into hurricane glasses to serve.

Rum is a spirit surrounded by romanticism thanks to its affiliation with Caribbean pirates. What better way to celebrate World Rum Day than by either heading out to a bar to enjoy your favourite rum drink or by creating one in the comfort of your own home?
