Why are red and white wine glasses shaped differently?

From Mother’s Day to any of your important anniversaries, engraved glasses make great gifts for wine lovers. However, before selecting an inscription, it’s worth carefully considering which type of glass to buy. Wine glasses are designed to maximise the enjoyment and appreciation of those drinking, and vary greatly between those for red and white.

While there are glasses suited to specific wine, from chardonnay to Pinot noir, there are some common differences that are ever-present between glassware for red and white. The main areas of interest are the bowl and the stem.

White wine glasses have a smaller bowl than red wine glasses. Their bowl is also less curved and has a far narrower opening. The shorter bowl of the white wine glass makes it easier to bring the wine closer to their nose to appreciate its aroma, while the taller and wider shape of the bowl of a red wine glass is crafted to aerate the wine.

A lengthier stem is another notable feature of white wine glasses. Unlike red wine, white wine is temperature sensitive. To avoid people accidentally warming the wine with their hand, stems are longer allowing more space to keep a safe distance.
