We all love to receive trophies, but which as the most valuable? Here are four real heavyweights:
The FIFA World Cup trophy may be regarded as the world’s most expensive and prestigious trophy. The trophy was introduced in 1974, after the Jules Rimet Trophy was awarded in perpetuity to Brazil in 1970 for winning the tournament three times. Made from solid 18-carat gold, it weighs around 6.1 kilograms. Costing $50,000 to make in 1974, the current value is around $20m (£15.8m).
Standing 1.6 metres high and weighing 45 kilograms, the Borg-Warner Trophy is possibly the largest trophy. Made from sterling silver, the Indianapolis 500 trophy has a sculptured image of the winning driver added to it each year. Its value today is around $1.3m (£1m).
The FA Cup has had, to date, five versions. The first in 1872, at the competition’s inception. The trophy was stolen in 1895 and a replica used until the 1911 version was introduced, continuing to be in use until 1991. An identical replacement then had to be made as the original had too much wear and tear. In 2014, a new, sturdier trophy, still with the 1911 design, was introduced weighing 6.3 kilograms. The trophy’s true value lies in it being the prize for the world’s oldest association football competition.
In the world of horse racing, the Preakness Stakes winner can expect to take home the Woodlawn Vase, a 13.6 kilogram sterling silver trophy with an insurance value possibly around £2m.
