When Roger Federer won his 100th single’s title at the Dubai 2019 Championship, he was presented with a trophy in the shape of a sailing ship, which seemed a strange choice for a tennis trophy. Indeed, it appears that over the years, tennis has gained a reputation for some of the most bizarre trophies ever presented. Here are just a few examples.
The Winston-Salom US Open awards winners with a pewter star that resembles Superman’s spacecraft in the 1978 film of the same name. It is not even clear if there is anywhere to engrave the winner’s name on the strange looking trophy.
The Croatian Open crystal trophy does, however, have plenty of space on its double tiered plinth, yet the top is in the shape of an oval football and is of such enormous proportions that winners may be lost for words.
There are some engraved awards that are more likely to be taken for a coffee table conversational piece than a tennis trophy, such as the Paris Masters trophy. The unusual award is meant to represent the organic properties of tennis and is in the shape of a tree, with the winners’ names engraved on each branch.
Another French title, the Moselle Open, has a trophy that looks more like the Sleestak creatures from the television show Land of the Lost. The vivid green, egg-shaped glass, decorated with a circular pattern, is a sight to behold.
