Healthy cocktails on trend for 2020

According to a survey by CGA BrandTrack, low or alcohol-free cocktails look set to become a major player in the drinks market in 2020.

The survey found that younger age groups, predominantly 18 to 24 year olds, are increasingly turning to non-alcoholic drinks, with around 15% describing themselves as fully teetotal. A number of factors have been attributed to this, including the desire to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Research suggests that instead of eliminating alcohol all together, many drinkers are choosing low-alcohol options. This seems to be especially true for the mid-week drinker. Busy lives and a healthier lifestyle awareness play a big part in this change. A CGA Mixed Drinks Report shows that more than a third of low or alcohol-free drinkers (38%) are consuming more than in 2018. Meanwhile, 55% of drinkers believe the non-alcoholic cocktails taste better or similar to their classic versions.

The report also showed that choosing the low or alcohol-free option was from a desire to limit alcohol consumption by 21% of those surveyed, and to avoid a hangover by 20%. Operators and suppliers now need to ensure that the quality, range, and serve lives up to the same standards as traditional alcoholic cocktails. Nathan Boyes from CGA explains:

“If operators and suppliers can get all these factors right, non-alcoholic cocktails could create the perfect blend for success in 2020 and beyond.”

The correct engraved drinkware, fresh and high quality ingredients, interesting flavours and a price to suit are all factors the hospitality industry needs to consider.
