With the award season well under way, albeit in a slightly different format than usual, 2020 could be the year that an 85-year-old Hollywood record is broken, as streaming giant Netflix is on target to take the crown from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) for the most Academy Award Best Picture nominations from a single film studio.
MGM have held the record since 1937, when the studio received five nominations for Best Picture at the ninth Academy Awards. Netflix has been steadily increasing its library of films, and 2020 has seen many new releases going straight to the streaming giant’s catalogue, instead of being released in cinemas as usual. This might have given Netflix the edge over its competitors.
The Oscars are probably the most well-known of all the entertainment industry awards, and the iconic golden statuette is instantly recognisable worldwide. Standing at 34 centimetres high and weighing in at a hefty 3.8 kilograms, the solid bronze statuette boasts a 24-karat gold plating.
The figure depicts a golden man holding a sword – this figure was originally a knight, but the design has become simplified over the years. The knight was said to represent a “crusader” of the film industry. The engraved awards don’t bear the winners names until after they have been presented, as this keeps the identity of winners under wraps until the golden envelope is opened.
The 93rd Academy Awards are scheduled to be aired in Hollywood, Los Angeles at the Dolby Theatre on 25th April, 2021.
