Academy Awards sees surprise winners

The Academy Awards, or Oscars as they are affectionately known, never cease to surprise, and the 2020 ceremony was no exception.

The glamourous affair was held on February 9th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The stars turned out in all their finery to celebrate the 92nd Oscars. It was a glittering ceremony full of shocks and drama.

The standout live performance came from Eminem, who thrilled the audience with a completely unscheduled appearance to perform “Lose Yourself”. The rapper had failed to turn up back in 2003 when his film, 8 Mile, won an Oscar.

The Best Original Score was won by Hildur Guônadóttir, the first woman to win the award for 23 years, for the film Joker, and Sir Elton John won Best Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from the successful biopic, Rocketman. Elton last won this award in 1995 with “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from The Lion King.

However, the biggest shock of the evening came from the film Parasite, a South Korean film that swept the board, taking away four of the biggest prizes of the night. Parasite received South Korea’s very first Oscar, and was the first non-English film to ever win Best Picture in the Academy Awards history.

The film also walked away with Best Director, Best International Film and Best Original Screenplay. Director, Bong Joon-ho, will be celebrating winning the coveted engraved awards for a long time to come.
